How does induction cooking work?
Induction cooktops create a magnetic field that heats only the cookware when it comes into contact with the surface. The cookware itself becomes the heat source, making it more efficient and precise than traditional gas or electric stoves.
Do I need special cookware for induction cooking?
Yes, induction cooktops require magnetic cookware, such as cast iron or stainless steel with a magnetic base. To check if your cookware is compatible, see if a magnet sticks to the bottom.​
Is induction cooking safe?
Induction cooking is considered very safe. Since there’s no open flame, the risk of burns or kitchen fires is reduced. The cooktop surface remains relatively cool, heating only where the pot or pan is placed.  It also emits no harmful emissions. 
How fast does induction cooking heat up?

Induction cooking is incredibly fast, often boiling water or heating food in a fraction of the time it takes with gas or electric cooktops. This makes it a time-saving option for busy kitchens.
​Does an induction cooktop stay hot after use?
The cooktop itself does not generate heat, but it can retain heat from the cookware. The surface cools down faster than a traditional stove, though caution is still advised after cooking.
    
Can I control the temperature on an induction cooktop?
  • ​Induction cooktops offer precise temperature control, allowing you to adjust heat instantly. This is especially useful for tasks like simmering or melting, where consistent, controlled heat is crucial.
Is induction cooking more energy-efficient?
Yes, induction cooking is more energy-efficient because it transfers heat directly to the cookware, reducing energy waste. Estimates show that induction can be 70-90% efficient compared to 40-55% for gas stoves.
Are there any rebates available?
Currently there are no federal rebates for induction cooking.  However, rebates, or other incentives like interest loans, may be able at a state level e.g. Victorian Energy Upgrades Program or Tasmania's Energy Saver Loan Scheme.
Assumes fitted cost of a mid-range induction hob, and mid-range gas cooktop of $2,500 each.  Solar and battery assumes feed in tariff of 5 cents per kWh and an annual usage of 292 kWh.  Gas option assumes 3,336 MJ of annual use, at 3.5 cents per MJ, plus gas grid connection of 70 cents per day.  The gas grid connection charge is included as with electrification this can be avoided.  Without the gas grid connection charge the total cost for gas would $4,241.
